The Responsive Open Learning Environment (ROLE)

What Is ROLE?

The Responsive Open Learning Environment (ROLE) is a European Union-funded project built around a deceptively simple premise: learners, not institutions, should control their own learning environment. The approach is grounded in Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) — the idea that students who shape their own study context engage more deeply and retain more effectively. The project brought together 16 research groups across six EU countries and China.

How It Works

ROLE does not replace existing learning management systems — it extends them. Using cloud computing and open Web sources, it layers a widget-based Personal Learning Environment (PLE) on top of whatever platform an institution already runs. Widgets function much like smartphone apps: browse the store, select what you need, and arrange them on your own screen.

Three core widgets illustrate the approach. A language resource browser lets you paste a web page URL and look up unfamiliar terms in context. A translator widget renders each word faithfully within its sentence. A vocabulary trainer builds a personal word list for ongoing reference. Together they show how modular, composable tools can serve a single learning goal without locking the learner into a fixed curriculum.

"ROLE is essentially about enabling someone to become self-regulated — to become an independent learner by taking complete control over their learning process." — Alexander Mikroyannidis, The Open University, UK

Who Benefits

ROLE targets anyone involved in learning — students, educators, trainers, researchers, and workplace learners. Its objectives are:

ROLE is particularly well suited to lifelong and workplace learning — contexts where no single institution can define what a person needs to know next.
