How Cambridge International Examinations Works Online

Cambridge Assessment International Education processes over eight million answer scripts annually from centres worldwide. Behind that scale sits a digital infrastructure that most candidates never see.

CIE Direct: The Administrative Hub

CIE Direct is the secure online platform through which registered exam centres manage every stage of an exam cycle. Its key functions:

All schools awarded a Cambridge qualification receive CIE Direct login credentials on registration. Video tutorials for exam officers are available on the Cambridge website.

From Script to Grade

Once an exam ends, scripts are scanned and distributed digitally to examiners — teachers and subject specialists who mark on screen. Multiple-choice papers are marked automatically. All other scripts go through a standardisation process:

Raw marks become grades through Grade Boundaries — the minimum mark required for each grade. Boundaries are set using a combination of statistical evidence and expert review, which means a student is not penalised if a particular paper turned out to be harder than usual. Senior examiners carry out final checks before results are released.

"Every student's work is marked in the same way — regardless of where in the world they sat the exam."
